This Privacy Policy explains how The Tazers (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses, and protects your personal information when you visit thetazers.com, shop for our merchandise, sign up for our newsletter, or otherwise interact with us. It is written to comply with the South African Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 (POPIA) and, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Who we are
The Tazers is a South African band based in Johannesburg. For privacy-related queries, the responsible person is the band’s general contact: info@thetazers.com.
What information we collect
Depending on how you interact with us, we may collect the following:
- Order & account information — your name, billing and shipping address, email address, phone number, and order history when you buy merchandise.
- Payment information — payment card details are processed directly by our payment provider (Yoco) and are not stored on our servers. We receive only a transaction reference and status from Yoco.
- Contact form & email correspondence — name, email address, and the message content when you contact us.
- Newsletter sign-ups — your email address (and name, if provided) when you opt in to receive band updates.
- Technical & usage data — IP address, browser type, device information, pages visited, referring URL, and timestamps. Collected automatically when you visit the site.
- Cookies and similar technologies — see the Cookies section below.
How we use your information
- To process and ship your orders, including communicating with you about delivery and providing customer support.
- To respond to enquiries sent via our contact form, email, or social media.
- To send newsletters and tour announcements, but only if you have explicitly opted in. You can unsubscribe at any time.
- To understand how the website is used and improve its performance, content, and user experience (via Google Analytics).
- To prevent fraud, secure our website, and comply with applicable laws.
- To run advertising and remarketing campaigns on platforms such as Google and Meta (Facebook/Instagram). We do not run such campaigns at present, but our website is set up to support them in future. When we do, this Policy will be updated and you will see a clear cookie consent banner.
Legal basis for processing (POPIA & GDPR)
- Contractual necessity — to fulfil an order you have placed.
- Legitimate interest — to operate a secure, functional website and protect against fraud and abuse.
- Consent — for newsletter subscriptions, marketing cookies, and analytics cookies (where required). You may withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation — to comply with tax, accounting, and consumer-protection laws.
Cookies and tracking technologies
We use cookies to make the site work and to understand how visitors use it. Cookies fall into three categories:
- Strictly necessary cookies — required for the site to function (shopping cart, checkout session, security). Cannot be switched off.
- Analytics cookies — set by Google Analytics 4. Help us understand visitor numbers, popular pages, and traffic sources in aggregate. IP addresses are anonymised where possible.
- Marketing cookies — currently not active. If we begin running Google Ads or Meta (Facebook/Instagram) advertising campaigns, marketing cookies (e.g. Meta Pixel, Google Ads conversion tag) will be used to measure ad performance and serve relevant ads. You will be asked for consent before any such cookies are placed.
You can manage or refuse cookies via your browser settings. Refusing analytics or marketing cookies will not affect your ability to use the site.
Who we share your information with
We share your personal information only with the third parties needed to operate our website and fulfil your orders:
- Yoco Technologies (Pty) Ltd — our payment processor. Yoco receives your payment details directly through their secure payment form. Yoco’s privacy policy.
- Shipping providers — we share your name and delivery address with the courier handling your parcel.
- Google LLC — Google Analytics for traffic analysis. Google’s privacy policy.
- Meta Platforms, Inc. — (only if/when we activate Meta advertising) for ad measurement and remarketing. Meta’s privacy policy.
- Hosting and email infrastructure — our website and email are hosted on a server we operate. Standard server logs include IP addresses and request data.
- Authorities — where required to do so by law, court order, or to protect our rights.
We do not sell your personal information.
International transfers
Some of our service providers (notably Google and Meta) are located outside of South Africa and may process your data in the United States, the European Union, or elsewhere. We rely on the contractual safeguards and certifications these providers maintain (e.g. EU Standard Contractual Clauses, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework) to ensure your data is protected to standards comparable to POPIA.
How long we keep your information
- Order records: at least 5 years, to comply with tax and consumer-protection laws.
- Contact form messages: up to 2 years, then deleted unless an ongoing matter requires longer.
- Newsletter records: until you unsubscribe, plus a short period for compliance evidence.
- Analytics data: as configured in Google Analytics 4 (default 14 months).
- Server logs: typically 30 days.
Your rights
Under POPIA (and GDPR where applicable) you have the right to:
- Be informed about how we use your information (this Policy).
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Have inaccurate information corrected or incomplete information completed.
- Request deletion of your information where there is no longer a lawful basis to keep it.
- Object to processing, including direct marketing.
- Withdraw consent you have previously given.
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa) at inforegulator.org.za, or with your local supervisory authority if you are in the EU.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at info@thetazers.com. We will respond within 30 days.
Security
Our website is served exclusively over HTTPS. We use industry-standard measures to protect your personal information, including encryption in transit, restricted server access, and regular software updates. Payment card details never touch our servers — they are entered directly into Yoco’s secure payment form.
Children
Our website is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please email info@thetazers.com and we will delete it.
Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. Material changes will be flagged on this page, and the “Last updated” date at the top will be revised. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the revised Policy.
